17th of Tammuz: Fast Day - July 1st

The fast of the 17th of the Hebrew month of Tammuz, known as Shivah Asar B'Tammuz, is the start of a  three-week mourning period for the destruction of Jerusalem and the two Holy Temples.

Because of the holiness of Shabbat, the fast of Tammuz 17 is this year postponed to today, Tammuz 18. We refrain from all food and drink from "daybreak" (about an hour before sunrise, depending on location) until nightfall. Special prayers and Torah readings are added to the day's services.

Sunday, July 1st
Fast Starts: 5:08 AM
Fast Ends: 8:43 PM

Moishe is sitting in synagogue one Sabbath morning when he falls asleep and starts to snore. The synagogue care taker quickly comes over to him, taps him softly on his shoulder and says, "Please stop your snoring, Moishe, you're disturbing the others in the synagogue."

"Now look here," says Moishe, "I always pay my membership in full, so I feel I have a right to do whatever I want."

"Yes, I agree," replies the caretaker, "but your snoring is keeping everybody else awake." - click on the picture
